Mercian continues to create new products that attract market interest by combining its accumulated fermentation know-how with the latest advances in biotechnology. Antibiotics Kasugamycin and Josamycin, developed in the 1960s, have been particularly successful and continue to sell well in Japan and overseas. Our first significant entry into the pharmaceuticals field came in 1981 with the introduction of Aclacinon inj., an antibiotic used to treat malignant tumors. The market share of Pinorubin inj., another antitumor antibiotic that acts directly on cancerous cells, continues to grow in Japan and China, where it is marketed through a joint venture. Veterinary antibiotic Aivlosin is becoming increasingly popular for treating infectious diseases in chickens and swine, and domestic and international sales continue to expand.
Recently, we introduced high-output, low-cost manufacturing processes for high-quality L-homoglutamic acid and L-pipecolic acid, important materials for pharmaceutical intermediates. We are aiming for new developments in our bioconversion business by accurately identifying customer needs and working with the Bioresource Laboratories. Through these and other efforts, we are expanding our lineup of bulk pharmaceuticals, which includes antibiotics and anti-cancer drugs, and pharmaceutical intermediates. At the same time, we are expanding our bioconversion business in Japan and overseas with a view to cultivating the business as a future pillar of the Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals Company's operations.
